Eric Idle? He doesn't look much like you I suppose (though more
than Woody Allen!) but then, I know for a fact you don't favor
casting based on looks.

If it's AFP casting, I wanna be played by Lauren Graham.

If it's Tale casting, then I think Messy could be done well by
Sarah Clarke

S'true. If I was really put on the spot I would probably do something like
cast Whoopi Goldberg as me and change my back story a little.

Makes sense. Though I suspect that Hollywood Messy is probably played by
Jessica Alba.

That leads to Laura Graham as well. Did you mean Sarah Clarke from 24?

I have to confess I always thoguht Messy should be played by Sandra
Bullock.

Er... Yes. I really *liked* Nina.

She's okay, but since she bears a such a striking resemblance to
my cousin Elizabeth, she can't possibly play me.

I think it's obvious that Tommy Lee Jones should play Eric. He's

Has anyone here seen the "alternative ending"? The one which

Really? I hadn't heard of that. But we watched that season on
rented DVDs... Was it supposed to be an easter egg, or just a
special feature?

Ah. Personally, I have no opinion. My days are too short for me to be
able to follow any series at all. I've seen the sporadic episode of
House, been baffled by five minutes of Lost, winced and changed channel
after a couple of minutes of Desperate Housewives and that's about it.

Oh, yeah, I bought Once More With Feeling as a present to my GF last
year, so I've seen that.

The only things I sit down and actually watch nowadays are Scrapheap
Challenge (Junkyard Wars) and Mythbusters. Which probably says soething
or the other about me and my admiration for clever technical solutions.

Good for two episodes or so running, and then he starts to get
irritating. But at least the young female doctor isn't mooning around
over him anymore (something I found even more irritating). Hugh
Laurie's not a bad actor though.
Anyway, what is it with medical dramas at the moment? The channels are
practically full of the things.

Oh yes. Good for about five minutes and then irritating as hell.

At the moment, the only thing I'll actually watch avidly is... well, I
was going to say Q.I. but that finished ages ago. New series of Dr Who
on Saturday, of course...

I'd need cable for that. And I'd need to be home when they're on,
which never happens. I did try to download some Junkyard Wars the
other day (after watching "American Inventor," because I had a
craving for a real invention game show) but the attempt failed.

How dare you disagree with me! Take that!! <utilises pillow>

Incidentally, House is pretty much the only television my sister
watches, and she's a medical student, so she practically counts it as
research.

There's also a step up from Scrapheap Challenge. Salvage Squad, which
involves renovating unusual vehicles. It sometimes has the same level of
inventive improvisation but also features really high levels of
craftsmanship. I find it reassuring that both programmes have an audience.
Incidentally the main engineer on Salvage Squad is a woman which is also
neat.

We also have a step down from Mythbusters. Brainiac - Science Abuse, which
is immensely entertaining, particularly the fixation on blowing up
caravans in obscure ways.

I've seen bits of a couple of episodes. While not entirely my cup of
tea, I do appreciate that it's probably very successful in interesting
"lads" in science.

I saw the experiment where they tried to find out whether natural or
artificially enhanced female breasts were the best floatation aids.
Putting two pretty young ladies with very large busts and tiny bikinis
in a swimming pool is probably a scientific job that would interest most
young men.

Oh, the conclusion was that they were equally effective. I tell you
this so you don't have to try to find and see the episode if you missed
it. ;-)

But then I would have to:
a) find somewhere to download them from,
b) find somewhere to buy them from,
c) buy them on DVD and rip them, or
d) get a TV tuner card and hook the computer up to the cable box and
remember to set it to the right channel

All are too much hassle. Anyway, since I already have a laptop with
good battery life in my backpack, I can't really see the point in
getting another device, with smaller screen.

Not too hard (iTunes if you prefer them legal; the usual suspects
otherwise).

Which is what I did.

Point taken. My laptop weighs more than 2kg [1], so I prefer not to lug
it around unless I really need it.

In the case of my last workplace, I didn't: with computers both at home
and at work, and a broadband link between them, I didn't need it at
either end; and I figured I could survive a 40 minute commute without a
PC. Watching recorded TV on a PDA, OTOH, is a nice option when you're
too tired to read...

It works two ways, there is also the way they set up clearly invalid
experiments for the hell of it, which appeals to the remnants of the
scientist in me. It'a often precisely how lab work should really be. The
second series toned down the scantily clad ladies quite a bit, and went
for more blowing stuff up.

My all time favourites have been walking on custard and what to land on

That's not fair. You forget all the experiments where they have someone
drink lots of beer and see how this affects his ability to play darts,
and where people are given different spicy dishes to check which one
gives you the worst breath...

As I said, it's not my cup of tea. There is a good show in there,
somewhere, but it's too "laddish" for me. Carmilla, recently turned 13

It was on the UK release as a special feature, accessed from the menu.
Kiefer Sutherland's wife lives. He finds her tied up in the backroom,
he, his wife and his daughter all hug each other and everyone lives
happily ever after.

Something like that, anyway. I prefer the ending they went with,
though it would have been much better if they'd offed the daughter
instead of the wife.

I like the explosions, but I don't like the style. As you say, too
laddish - and, in many bits, too childish. And don't get me started on
the eminently fastforwardable "I can do science, me".

Exploding Golf and the thermite bits are fun, though.
